Why we support the Bereavement Standard

Every year, more than 600,000 families across the UK lose a loved one.

Grieving is a difficult process, which can be made so much worse by having to manage the paperwork that someone leaves behind. We work hard to support our families through the necessary arrangements at a very difficult time. However, when someone dies there is more than just the funeral to arrange.

From utilities, banks and insurances to subscriptions and social media, handling the administration that comes with closing down each of these accounts can be extremely time consuming and stressful.

More than 80,000 members of the public have already signed a petition calling on the government to establish a new set of agreed standards, which commercial service providers would have to meet to make it easier to close down the accounts of someone who has died.

This Bereavement Standard would establish an agreed timeframe for companies to respond to bereavement enquiries; a dedicated customer care channel and standardised paperwork.

The petition has been set up by the mother and daughter team behind Settld, a new organisation campaigning to make death administration simpler. An early day motion has already been discussed in the House of Commons and more than 1,200 people completed a Bereavement Standard survey, supported by charities and groups such as the National Association of Funeral Directors.
