How to cope with losing an unborn child?
Losing a baby during pregnancy, or shortly after birth is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a person can go through, whether it happens early or later on. It’s important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to grieve, and no set timeline for healing as everyone’s journey is deeply personal. If you, or someone you know, is going through this particular journey, below are some gentle ways that can help cope with the pain of losing a child.
Allow yourself to grieve
Grief after pregnancy loss can be complex – it can involve many different feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, and even numbness. It’s important to give yourself permission to feel whatever emotions come through, try not to judge them or push them away. Sitting with your grief and working through your feelings, whether that be by journaling, talking to a loved one, or seeking the support of a professional, can all help in the grieving process.
Reach out for support
Remember that you don’t have to go through this alone. Talking to someone who understands, whether that’s a partner, family member, friend, or counsellor, can help ease the weight of grief. There are many different support groups, both in person and online that can bring comfort and companionship during this time, with other people’s stories reminding you that you are not alone in your pain.
Here at Heart of England, we offer a bereavement support service that provides a supportive and caring service. You can chat online with one of our dedicated, professional counsellors for free, who will provide compassionate support during this difficult time.
Honour your baby
Finding a small way to remember your baby in a way that feels right for you can be deeply healing in the grieving process. Acts of remembrance help acknowledge the love and connection that will always remain, and ensures that your baby’s memory will always be part of your story. Whether you choose to plant a tree in their memory, write them a letter or keep an item, such as a scan photo or keepsake, there are many meaningful ways to honour their memory.
Give yourself time
It’s important to keep in mind that there’s no deadline for healing, some days will feel easier than others, and that’s okay. Over time, the pain will soften, but your love for your baby will always remain. Healing from this grief can be complex, but it doesn’t mean forgetting. Remember to take care of yourself, rest when you need to and lean on those around you for emotional support.
What support is available for a miscarriage?
Unfortunately, one in four pregnancies can end in miscarriage. Losing a child, at any age, is an incredibly painful time that requires a lot of support from those around you. If you or someone you love has experienced a miscarriage, it is so important that the right support is provided during this time.
There are many different options available for emotional and bereavement support in relation to miscarriage. Most hospitals will have dedicated bereavement midwives or counsellors who can provide compassionate emotional support, and there are options to seek counselling and talking therapies through your GP.
Here at Heart of England, we not only offer bereavement support to provide a safe space to express your emotions, but we can also help with the practical arrangements following a loss, such as memorial options, funeral planning and certificates of loss. If you’re looking for guidance on planning a funeral or memorial after suffering a miscarriage, we have a blog detailing what options are available to you for further information.
