Heart of England Co-op Funerals holds an open day at Nuneaton’s historic Park House

The Co-operative Funerals in Nuneaton is inviting members of the public through its doors during an open day due to take place on Saturday 3rd June between 9am and 2pm.

The Heart of England Co-operative Society’s Funeral Division, which operates the funeral home within the historic Park House, has teamed up with Nuneaton Memories to organise the event.

Visitors will be able to see inside the Riversley Road building and meet with staff from The Co-operative Funerals for advice, support and information on any aspect surrounding death and planning a funeral.

There will also be a photo exhibition featuring images of yesteryear Nuneaton, put together by Nuneaton Memories.
Darryl Smith, General Manager of the Funeral Division, said: “It’s now more than two years since we opened our doors at our flagship Park House funeral home, following a £1.5 million investment project allowing us to relocate from our former home less than a mile away in Central Avenue.
“At the time of the opening we held an open week for visitors and this created a real buzz of excitement, as to this day the building holds a lot of special memories for most people in the town and we had given them their first opportunity to go back and take a look inside.

“We attracted a lot of visitors during that week and received much positive feedback. It was always our intention to organise a similar event in the future.”

Dating back to 1915, Park House was formerly home to the New Art & Mining School (The Nuneaton County Mining and Technical School) at a time when the town was a principal player in Britain’s coal mining industry. The building housed mining classes during the day and art classes in the evening.
In more recent years Park House was used as an education centre by Warwickshire County Council, before being known as Park House Youth and Community Centre.

The building stood empty in the two years before The Co-operative Funerals’ takeover, with the youth facility closing down in 2012. The opening of the funeral home marked an exciting new chapter for the facility.
